Buy a New 2004 or a 2005?
Excerpt: It's that time of year when the new cars and trucks sit on dealers' lots alongside last year's models. The deals look more tempting on the 2004s, but it's not always clear which purchase would be the better long-term value.
It's that time of year when the new cars and trucks sit on dealers' lots alongside last year's models. The deals look more tempting on the 2004s, but it's not always clear which purchase would be the better long-term value.
For example, GM just introduced its "red tag" year-end sale. According to a TV ad, "The price on the tag is the price you pay. See some red, save some green." While GM's incentives on some 2005 models are tempting (up to $4,500 cash back if you finance through GMAC), they're downright generous on many 2004 models -- up to $7,000 cash or 0% financing for up to six years.
Other carmakers also have spiffs in place for 2004 models -- like $4,500 cash back on the Lincoln Navigator (versus $2,000 on the 2005 model) and $3,500 on the Chrysler Sebring convertible (versus $2,000 on the 2005). Even Lexus is offering modest cash rebates on its 2004 models.
Foreign carmakers are more likely to offer subsidized interest rates or leases, or dealer cash supplied by the manufacturer, which means it's up to the dealer how much to pass along to you. For example, Volkswagen is giving dealers $3,500 to help sell the 2004 Passat wagon and sedan.
