Options Open On Tax Reform

President Bush is enthused about pursuing his campaign pledge to reform the tax code, but it remains too early to set a timetable or to guess what shape the effort will take, the Treasury Department's top tax official said Tuesday.

Bush has pledged to appoint a bipartisan panel to come up with specific tax reform recommendations.

Gregory Jenner, acting assistant Treasury secretary for tax policy, told a tax conference that it was "way too early to speculate when the panel will be appointed" or, for that matter, who will be on the commission, how many people will serve, who they will report to, or what they will say.

In a panel discussion, former House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer, a Texas Republican, told the conference that he expected the White House to steer clear of proponents of major tax reform measures, such as a flat tax or national sales tax, when it picks commission members.
