Here are some more year-end tax maneuvers that might help you cut your tax tab for this year.

Q: What's the best timing for my income and deductions?

A: Tax advisers often suggest that clients consider postponing income (such as year-end bonuses) into next year to defer the tax hit. For most people who itemize, the general advice is to accelerate deductions -- such as charitable donations and state and local tax payments -- into this year, if possible.

But consider different strategies if you're ensnared by the alternative minimum tax. In that case, you shouldn't accelerate payment of your state and local income tax, real-estate tax or investment-advisory fees into this year, says Bernard Kent of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Detroit. If you're in the AMT, this is very deep water, and you probably need to ask a tax pro.
