Excerpt: The semiconductor industry's primary stock index will get its first makeover in a year and a half on Friday, when two stocks get dropped and three are added.

The semiconductor industry's primary stock index will get its first makeover in a year and a half on Friday, when two stocks get dropped and three are added.

The Philadelphia Stock Exchange said it will add the stocks of Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (FSL: news, chart, profile), Infineon Technologies AG (IFX: news, chart, profile), and Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL: news, chart, profile) to its Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX: news, chart, profile), known as the "Sox" for its trading symbol.

Motorola Inc. (MOT: news, chart, profile) and LSI Logic Corp. (LSI: news, chart, profile) will be removed from the index. The changes will occur before the market opens Friday.

For the year, the chip index is down 16 percent to 428.

The additions and subtractions reflect "leadership changes in the semiconductor industry," said Daniel Carrigan, a vice president at the Philadelphia exchange, according to a statement. The exchange administers several option products based on various industries.
